Young Love

Okay, so I’ve been a little nostalgic lately and I scanned some old photographs of our family. When Denise and I began dating, she had long blonde hair… naturally blonde. I had long hair, too.

Denise also bought a brand new Landcruiser FJ40, which I loved to drive and she snapped this photo, as we drove by the 76 station at the corner of Painter Avenue and Lambert Road in Whittier.

In the Spring of 1974, after Denise graduated from Sierra High School, we drove north to pick up Denise’s brother at UC Davis and brought him home. We stopped in one of our favorite destinations from our desert days, Virginia City NV, and I took this photo of Denise. Wow!!!

Wow! I have never seen those pics before…Mom looks gorgeous, Dad your hair is bordering on a mullet, but other than that your face hasn’t changed one bit! I love the caption on the pic of mom “My Reno Shirt”…wished she still had it!

Yes, mom is babe-a-licious in that photo… it’s one of my all-time favorites. And, no, my hair was nothing like a mullet… it was long and straight, full bodied and beautiful… the envy of many a young lady at the time.

Keep watching… we’ll be posting more of these photos in the days to come.

The memories start flowing when I see those pictures. Bo, I know you loved ….. Denise!!! (I almost said Land Cruiser) Wasn’t it baby blue? Denise was pretty remarkable having her own car at such a young age. Our bedroom had all her antique furniture that she had purchased and dont’ get me to start talking about all those clothes she had. Yes, I was a very envious junior higher in those days. I’m sure it wasn’t YOU that eventually rolled the cruiser? We’ll save that story for another entry.
    Keep the photos coming!

Look, the Landcruiser was an extension of Denise’s personality… who she was, what she stood for, as well as an expression of her aesthetic at that time. To love Denise’s FJ40 was to love Denise…

Yes, I’m unashamed to admit that I was overboard for the girl with the long blonde hair, the blue Landcruiser and the Dr. Scholl clogs… not to mention the fact that she was the first person I ever knew who owned a pair of Birkenstocks, before they became a cultural icon/political fashion statement.

Really, though, it was her cooking…
